Reconnecting

Reconnecting

Back to the buzzing, beeping marasmus
of cold hospitals and medical staff
inquiring of my privacy.

Back to the serpentine display of wires
and stents, catheters, oxygen masks,
as I lie above ground, a root system
upended and drained then rehydrated.

Open your eyes to a homecoming
you didn’t quite wish for.

Nurses and aides chatter and hover
Around me mimicking salvation.
Routinely and professionally starched.

The saline drips hydration back
into my body until
I am as plump as a tomate,
red with anger and irreverence.

Family look at me, hopeful for recognition,
and pray chains around me, keeping
Me bound to this world and their lives.
